Gouger Blades
A word about Blades. The two most critical components in any gouger are the Guide and the Blade. As a means of variation with sanding or filing the guide should not be fiddled with as Tabuteau once said "to change the guide is suicide" and there are a number of reasons for this. Only through precision machining should the guide be altered. The guide must be consistent throughout it's length otherwise each piece of cane will gouge differently. If one wants to change the fundamental nature of the reed, besides machining the guide, the blade is the only way to do it. The curve of the blade determines the function and tonal complexities of the reed. The apex or peak of the curve is paramount. Though there are adjustment mechanisms on most machines, these in themselves do not change the basic functions of the gouge. The only way is through the curve. I understand that as oboists, we each have our own approach to what is needed in the gouge and because of this I offer different curves. There really is no one size fits all. This is the area that I continue to develop and manufacture many prototypes to find curves that produce the best results for different styles of reed making and playing. I spend a great deal of time working with different curves to ascertain strengths and weaknesses in relation to potential shapes used. Because of that I can recommend certain blades for you and generally what one may expect with some different shaper tips.
All blades are hand polished and finished to insure smooth and even cutting.
The "E" blade. This is a very close 1918 copy that I currently use for all of my reeds and sampler cane sent out. Hardened stainless with a 49° cutting angle that insures very fine chips and durability.
It is more or less a classic double radius curve design that emphasizes cutting toward the inside of the machine. The curve is emphasized to compliment the guide which for my double radius machines is 5.5 on the outside and 5.25 on the inside. An excellent combination with my "EV" tip.

The B blade is another curved blank with a radius of 4.7 and requires additional finishing to be suitable for the double radius machine. However, when properly ground the blade provides an excellent gouge that is light and responsive without sacrificing tone. This is the blade that I have been sending out with the machines during the hot and humid months of summer. It is a type of gouge that requires very little removal from the back of the reed. Perfect for a more traditional style of reed making. This blade will also work with the single radius machine for those who prefer slightly thinner sides. This blade is essentially a custom make.

The single radius blade is sharpened and needs no additional work. The curve is based on a 4.5mm radius that is slightly wider in the sides. This blade will only work with the Roy single radius gouger and not the double radius machine. An excellent blade that cuts cleanly and very sharp right out of the box. It is sent out with the single radius and works well with many moderate to wider shapes as it is a stronger curve.
