The Roy Collection of Gougers

The All Brass Dual Bearing Guide Carriage
Double Radius Oboe Gouger

This beautiful oboe gouging machine will make your reed making a more confident and pleasant experience. The bed and guide are copies from an original Graf machine with a slight modification to the guide. The blade that is sent out with the machine is what I call the "E" blade and has proven to be  an excellent balance of strength, vibration and a wonderful sound with tonal complexities throughout the range of the instrument. The height mechanism utilizes a micrometer head that helps in accurate adjustment. There are two locking screws on the front to maintain height.

The gouger has a solid feel due to the high tolerance linear bearings and guide rod but at the same time is remarkably smooth and seemingly effortless. The aesthetic appearance has a dual function. The curves of the guide are very soft and easy on the hands and the weight of the guide carriage with the extreme sharpness of the blade enables one to gouge with ease. The removable guides that will incorporate different curve geometry, all aluminum cane clips, the ease of adjustment, aesthetic and functional appearance all contribute to the extraordinary experience.

The gouge produced is one I have been sending out recently which tends to be in the 60-47 region as it works with most all canes and shapes. This measurement also allows for those to lower the gouge to .57 if one wishes but still maintain an opening and curve as well as plenty of vibrating cane. This gouger can be set easily from .57-.62mm in .01 mm increments with accuracy.

Of all the gougers and gouging machines that I have used in my 25 years of professional playing I can say with confidence that this machine and the gouge it produces is of the finest.

VERSION 3

Picture
This is the latest update to my gouger world and is one based in principle off of the single radius platform with an updated guide, paired with the latest 4.5mm blade. The hardware is simple and so is the design. Very comfortable and easy to use like all of my gougers. The 4.5mm radius blade is one that former Principal Oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra, John Mack had referred to the curve being more or less ideal at the top of the blade.

This gouge is slightly more Robust than the others so the cane will feel heavier when scraping. It gives a bigger sound or tone and maybe suitable to players that prefer more reed.

As with any of my other gougers, cane samples may be purchased to try them out. When ordering specify which gouger combinations you would like.

"I can’t tell you enough how much I love this machine — it’s made my reeds (reed: life) so much better."  MD

"I appreciate your gougers rich sound...also congratulations, this is a big improvement in engineering compared to most machines in terms of Handling!"
AV

"I love your oboe gouges and am looking forward to the English Horn!" BP

"Thank you for sending the gouger so quickly. It's really a beautifully made machine. I have had a chance to make a couple of reeds off it, and I love the vibrant yet stable quality of the gouge. The machine cuts beautifully and the mitutoyo micrometer on top makes changing the thickness so easy. I appreciate all your great work. Thanks again." SN

"I received the gouger Monday morning. It came in great condition, it works smoothly and with ease.  The craftsmanship is absolutely top notch, and the cane is cut evenly and consistently. Thank you so much for guiding me through the process, I genuinely appreciate your help and I am more than satisfied with my purchase."   NC

"It gouges well, thanks to the gouging tip. I have also made some reeds on it and I can't tell you enough how much I love them. So easy to make reeds, lots of warmth and depth, vibrate readily and they all come together quickly."  MR

"I have really been loving my setup from you, especially now that I have switched over to my Hiniker full time. It really seems to work quite lovely with his instruments! ..."  KF

"I’ve been having great success with the gouger, and have already recommended it to a few people and students,..."  RM

"Your machine has already made 45 lovely oboe reeds for my business:)!"

"Once again I have to say thank you for providing such a wonderful and easy to use gouger, and I have been amazed by just how great of an impact it has had on my consistency- keep up the great work! " ED

"I used the first one in some auditions in the fall and made finals (very affirming), but I possibly love the second even more than the first. I will probably buy another one or two in the coming year, as long as you'll let me keep buying them up, lol."  LK

"I have received the beautifully made gougers! And thank you for the extra blade! I will try in the next few days, and let you know the results. Me and my students are all so excited to use them:)"X

"I received the gouger and it works great. Thanks!!!!!" AS

"I received the gouger late last week and so far it’s gorgeous and doing a great job."  ES

"The gouge feels great! I have made several very nice reeds on it that have a sweet tone, are vibrant and hold up in pitch. I appreciate many of the modifications you have made and the nylon cap instead of a roller bearing seems to work very well. Having the cane guards machines into the bed is also so wise!  I also think it is brilliant to have the ability for an interchangeable guide."  KM

"Got the machines this afternoon and I am a happy camper. Well thought out, beautifully made and equally attractive."  JD

"Success!!!!   I totally love it..."  SB

Double Radius Gouger for Oboe V 2.0

Picture
The design of this machine has proven to be an extraordinary combination of comfort, usability, accuracy and function. This is the oboe gouger that I use most and it is simple, light and easy. The hand fits comfortably on the machine and when used correctly very little pressure is required for a clean gouge. This gouger continues to be my favorite in its simplicity and ease of use.

This gouger produces a gouge that is beautifully vibrant and at the same time allows the player to have freedom from articulation and pitch troubles. The reeds make themselves, quickly and easily. They are light, stable and resonant. The guide commands the curve in this design. The guide is the same as the all brass utilizing a removable guide that can be exchanged for different curves. The guide carriage has curves and softened corners to prevent injury over long periods of gouging. The guide carriage is anodized aluminum with a guide rod linear bearing for lightness and ease of use. Because the the guides are interchangeable, the guide as shown above, may be swapped for a Graf copy or other future design. This gouger as well as the All Brass gouger works with the "E" blade "B" blade and 4.5mm radius blade. It is shipped with the "E" blade as standard.

This Graf guide copy is from one of my early gougers from the 80's and the guide measures 5.0/5.5mm divided equally down the centerline of the guide. Some of the Graf machines cut on the outside while others on the inside.
My smaller radius is on the inside so therefore that radius does the majority of the cutting. All of my doubles cut on the inside.
Picture
This Graf guide copy may be used with the V2 and All Brass gougers. The reeds are somewhat weaker but very malleable and full of tone much like the original Graf gouge. You may request a cane sample for a nominal fee I can send various gouged pieces to try. The blades that work with this guide are primarily the 4.5mm. Some adjustment may be necessary.

THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED MY DOUBLE RADIUS GOUGERS WILL BE HAPPY TO KNOW THAT THE FORWARD GUIDE IS EASILY REPLACED WITH A SMALL Phillips head SCREWDRIVER FOR SOME MODELS OR A 1.5 MM Allen wrench FOR OTHERS. ALTHOUGH THE REPLACEMENT GUIDE IS OF EQUAL HEIGHT INITIALLY SOME BLADE ADJUSTMENT MAY BE NECESSARY.

May be ordered with three blades.  The F Blade-thicker sides and robust tone, 2.5 blade-to me the classic combo light reeds and flexible tone, 4.5 blade-stronger setup but still easy playing. Must be noted that these blades are semi finished; meaning that some polishing or sanding may be required. A great way to learn about the gouge and the influence the blade has on the finished product. The chip should be between .05-.08mm.

Single Radius Gouger for Oboe

Picture
This gouge is made to be as strong as possible without sacrificing vibration. It produces a strong and vibrant reed.

The gouger has a hardened steel blade that is zinc coated to prevent rust. Due to the thickness of the brass guide this machine has a solid feel and consistently produces Identical gouged pieces. The height is easily adjusted with a traditional revolving eccentric bearing spindle found on other machines. The machine is a direct copy of early Graf machines with the exception of the modern bed design, single radius guide and height adjuster. Cane clips are of printed PLA or Aluminum, most suitable for the smoothness of operation.

This is an excellent machine for those that want to pursue gouging on their own but have not been introduced to gouging. A great economical resource for beginners and students.

The finest and simplest machine for those that are interested in this type of gouge.

Roy Oboe Pregouger Guillotine Combination

Picture
This combination Pre Gouger Guillotine will prepare your cane to exact specifications for all Roy gougers.

The Guillotine has a moveable cane length adjuster for varying bed lengths and also a very sharp curved blade that helps eliminate cracking of the cane when cutting. The blade housing is hardened steel. There is no need for soaking as the cane may be prepared dry. In addition the Guillotine has a very long chopping arm to alleviate the tension and force required. There is a safety rubber ball at the end of the arm to help protect your fingers from those really tough pieces of cane.

Includes the updated combo planer Oboe/EH and super tuff Garolite rod. The blade is very sharp hardened steel. The cane is planed to almost exactly 8 millimeters in width making it perfect for the bed of the Roy Gouger. The included precisely machined aluminum table stop is of a tongue and groove design that fits in a groove in the base plate. This allows for one to push with necessary force without movement of the planer. Preparing oboe cane becomes a singular and effortless experience with this tool combination.

Combo Oboe/EH Pregouger Guillotine

This Pre gouger Guillotine is interchangeable and can be used to prepare and plane both English Horn Cane and Oboe Cane for gouging. The planer is reversible and can be removed from the base with a Phillips head screwdriver. The blade is easily removed with the appropriate Allen wrench. By flipping the planer and reattaching, it will be able to plane oboe cane or EH, which ever is preferred. Likewise there is an included aluminum spacer which is also attached to the bed and will enable the correct distance for Oboe cane Guillotining. (is that a word?) A Polyacetal fiberglass pushrod with a comfortable handle is included. A table stop is not required.
