Gouger Blades
A word about Blades. The two most critical components in any gouger are the Guide and the Blade. The apex or peak of the curve is paramount. There really is no one size fits all. This is the area that I continue to develop and manufacture many prototypes to find curves that produce the best results for different styles of reed making.
The "E" blade. This is a very close 1918 copy that I currently use for all of my reeds and sampler cane sent out.
It is more or less a classic double radius curve design.

The "F" blade. With the Graf guide copy this combination creates a strong gouge with thicker sides.
The B blade is another curved blank with a radius of 4.7 and requires additional finishing to be suitable for the double radius machine. Due to the wide curve it yields a softer weaker gouge.
The single radius blade is sharpened and needs no additional work. The curve is based on a 4.5mm radius at the top. This blade will only work with the Roy single radius gouger.

THE PHILADELPHIA GUIDE
This guide is slightly larger than the Graf and provides a heavier, slightly weaker and somewhat flattened gouge overall. Works well with all blades. |
THE GRAF GUIDE
This guide is a copy of the very popular guide from the Graf gouger of the mid twentieth century. Measures 5.5mm on the outside and 5.0mm on the inside. Works well with the F and F2 blades. Thicker sides and relatively strong. |
THE ROY GUIDE
This guide is standard on all Roy double radius gougers and has a smaller radius on the inside which provides a strong stable gouge. Works best with the E and E2 blades. |
This Guides may be used with the interchangeable guide gougers. You may request a cane sample for a nominal fee I can send various gouged pieces to try.
THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED MY DOUBLE RADIUS GOUGERS WILL BE HAPPY TO KNOW THAT THE FORWARD GUIDE IS EASILY REPLACED WITH A SMALL Phillips head SCREWDRIVER FOR SOME MODELS OR A 1.5 MM Allen wrench FOR OTHERS. ALTHOUGH THE REPLACEMENT GUIDE IS OF EQUAL HEIGHT INITIALLY SOME BLADE ADJUSTMENT MAY BE NECESSARY.

•The Rear guide remains the same in all cases as it is not meant to interfere with the cutting action of the blade. The height of the forward guide prevents this.
